Quartz or Granite? Marble or Tile? Laminate or Concrete? Get the answers to all of your countertop questions!

Stone countertops in kitchens have been popular since the mid 90’s and the number one material used is still granite. But quartz and marble are taking a big piece of the pie, and people are starting to put natural and man made stone in other places around the house.

Think about a solid stone backsplash in the kitchen or solid quartz tub surround – Never clean grout again! Around the fireplace concrete and slabs of stone work well and have a long life, short on maintenance.

With all of the trends coming and going, how do you know which material is right for your project?

Think about how you use the space – in the kitchen, spills are likely, and some areas are used daily. In the bath, one area in particular will be hit with soap and water frequently. Using a natural and porous stone such as marble or soapstone can leave etching or patinas on some surfaces. That can add to character of the stone, or it can completely clash with the intended design. Ask an expert at your local supplier about the properties of the stone you are considering.

Always visit a showroom/warehouse to see the whole slab on display and bring any samples you may have (such as cabinet doors, paint chips or tile) so you can see it with the stone before you choose.

Make sure to ask your salesperson about warranties for different materials, timelines, deposits and any requirements for the template and installation. Working with your supplier on these will ensure a smooth process.
